China Snubs Obama Town Hall

16 11 2009

From: The Globe and Mail, 2009

In a very typical and anticipated move, China has decided not to allow millions of Chinese citizens to hear the President of the United States speak when he visited the country today.

The national television station, the Central China Television Network, will not be broadcasting a ‘town hall’ type question and answer period with 500 chinese students in Shanghai. The event will be broadcast on local Shanghai television and on the website of the official Xinhua News station. These two sources will broadcast the event uncensored. But these two news stations aren’t exactly accessible to the country as a whole. The US State Department plans to run feeds of the talk on Twitter, which China says it will allow access to, though as it stands, internet censorship in China does not allow access to Twitter, Facebook, or even Google.

Why the reluctance to allow citizens to hear President Obama speak? They allowed Clinton to speak uncensored – George W Bush too. Maybe it’s because of quotes that supported those who “faced down facism and communism”. Or his warnings that go something like, “those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent know that you are on the wrong side of history”.

Shona Holmes: The Face of Healthcare Propaganda?

30 07 2009

Healthcare reform has quickly become the summer’s most controversial American political topic. Following President Obama’s July 22nd speech, advocates and opposition of public healthcare have shifted efforts into high-gear. The Republican flag-bearer as shown above is a Canadian named Shona Holmes. In recently produced commercials for Patients United Now (funded by the Republican Party) and in various television interviews, Shona tells a harrowing tale of being diagnosed with a brain tumour, but due to Canada’s government run healthcare system was going to have to wait 6 months before seeing a specialist, and instead traveled to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona for treatment. In her words “if I’d relied on my government for healthcare, I’d be dead.”

But like infamous Joe “The Plumber”, there are a few discrepancies in Shona’s story. First of all, the life threatening brain tumour spoken of isn’t entirely accurate; according to the Mayo Clinic’s website, Shona received successful treatment for a Rathke’s cleft cyst (RCC). RCC’s can cause dizziness and potentially blindness, but ultimately is a benign cyst, and not cancer, nor life-threatening. Secondly, Shona suggests that she was able to receive the surgery immediately upon returning to the Mayo Clinic, when in fact the Mayo Clinic itself states that she underwent “weeks of tests and then got ready for the surgery.”

As a Canadian, what’s most disappointing about this story is how she misrepresents the Canadian healthcare system and general public opinion of Canadians. She states that Canadians are “ignorant” to the perils of our government run system and are too proud to admit its faults. Considering the voting of Tommy Douglas, the forefather of our national system, as the “Greatest Canadian”, she is right in saying we as a country are proud of our healthcare.

Certainly Canadians have been known to complain about some associated waiting times for treatment, just as I know some Americans who have experienced the same trials receiving care. Additionally, I do sympathize with Mrs. Holmes, and anyone faced with long wait times to receive diagnosis, tests or treatment, and I can only imagine the fear associated with the prospect of losing one’s eyesight. But Shona Holmes and other critics of the Canadian government run system fail to acknowledge its benefits. Universal healthcare is just that, universal. Government run healthcare doesn’t cater to those with the most money, or the best insurance policy, but instead seeks to treat everyone, with those in greatest need of medical care receiving priority.

I’m not suggesting that the Canadian system is best for the United States, but neither is President Obama. Considering that there are an estimated 46 million Americans without health insurance, and also considering that Shona Holmes allegedly spent 97 thousand dollars for her American treatment, it’s terribly saddening that there still are so many people fighting against reform in the United States when everyday more and more Americans can’t afford healthcare.

For a Canadian with a trumped up, albeit unfortunate story to be hired and paraded out to lie and sell propaganda to the American public isn’t necessarily surprising, that’s the nature of politics, but it is disappointing.

I also can’t help but believe that Mrs. Holmes will be grateful the next time she requires Canadian medical care and the last words she hears are “Take care, and have a good day!”, rather than “You can expect the bill in the mail.”

On an unrelated note, Shona Holmes has an interesting day-job when she’s not traveling the United States berating Canadian healthcare.

Tennessee Set to Relax Gun Laws

From: BBC, 2009

Yes, you read that correctly. The state of Tennessee is hoping to relax it’s gun laws this week by allowing concealed weapons into restaurants and bars. The law will require that anyone bringing weapons into such an establishment not drink alcohol, but people drink and drive don’t they? Will everyone be patted down at the door and then stamped to ensure they are not sold any shots? I doubt that. Additionally, Tennessee residents will be allowed to carry their weapons on school grounds and in public parks. Guns in the land where children play. The state currently has about 250 000 registered gun owners and about 130 000 of those have concealed weapons permits. I find gun control in the United States seriously lacking already. To me, the mix of guns and alcohol cannot be a good thing. Could bar fights turn into bar homicides? Weapons provide a sense of false security. Your gun isn’t for protection, your gun is made to kill. Here are some scary quotes:

”I had a case like that up in Gallatin,” said Harris, a Nashville lawyer. ”This kid had a handgun carry permit and was coming back from the range and didn’t unload his rifle. He got stopped for an unrelated issue. The rifle was quite visible and the officer asked to check it. This kid said yes, and all of a sudden something as innocuous as transporting the rifle from point A to point B becomes a criminal offense.”

The words ‘kid’ and ‘gun’ should definitely not be found together.

When prompted by the statement that guns are made specifically to kill, Niki Goeser Responds:

My answer to that is: ‘yes a gun can kill, but in the correct hands, it can be used to save innocent lives’. I don’t care so much about a bad guy’s life. I’m sorry, I don’t. They make the choice to be evil, that’s their choice. If they choose that, and I am armed I know what I’m doing, I will try to stop them.”

That’s pretty black and white Niki. What about the right to life? What about rehabilitation? There is a reason that the death penalty is illegal in most states as well as in most countries.

To all Global Warming Dissenters

8 07 2009
From: CBC, 2009

From: CBC, 2009

This morning there was an article in the CBC about the G8 meeting in Italy. One of the issues of course is climate change. One reader posted this about global warming:

“the whole CO2 scam is the greatest distraction from the real problems of economic globalization and human enslavement going. All these elite central bankers are set up to be collecting the carbon tax anyway. check out the second draft of the trillions dollars bailout bill (scam) where they have set themselves up.
You got to love they way these guys play both sides of the debate.
meanwhile future generations have been condemmed into economic slavery.

Even if you believe that CO2 is causing global warming you better take a good look at sattalite maps of China’ and wonder how a carbon tax (life tax) on working men and women of the west is going to solve this problem as their factories in communist china are exempt from all this enviormental is david suzukis tax free foundation asking you to boycott cheap goods from China??? Of course not!

Meanwhile you may have notice the earth has actually been getting colder since 2001. due to the Sun’s solar flare cycling down again.
yes that right the SUN (that big ball of fire in the sky ?) makes the earth heat up………now throw me in jail for being a heritic.
this is why they quickly changed the slogan from “global warming” to “climate change”
I think themost interesting technique used in this scam is the way it also promotes the religons of self loathing and nilislims so when these elites do put the screws into you and your desendants you will comply willingly.
oldest trick in the book used time and time again to herd humans.

google “great global warming swindle”″

To which I replied:

“Dear NickKakyakas:

You can refute ‘global warming’ all you want. That’s fine with me if there are people who don’t believe it. But there are many undeniable problems related to our environment that effect us right now. Sprawl has increased the rates of obesity tenfold, which increases things like heart disease. The chemicals we’ve been using on our food and in our goods have created a cancer plague that is one of the greatest killers known to man. Air pollution in nearly all of our urban centres has greatly increased asthma cases. All of these things put an incredible strain on our healthcare system as well as the families of millions who suffer from these ailments. Our lakes are all contaminated by chemicalized storm run-off due to our incistence on using concrete and pavement for everything, due to dumping of so much waste without proper attention to possible leaks, and due to unsustainable agricultural practices both with meats and veggies. I urge you to take a look at these real problems and help us out with what are true problems that effect us all this minute rather than bash the ambiguous term of ‘climate change’. At least by creating this global phemnomenon, awareness has been raised about environmental issues in general, whether the world is actually warming towards destruction or not.”

My point I think is quite clear. Whether or not you believe in global warming, climate change, whatever you want to call it. There are very serious environmental problems that our entire world society are confronted with and will only get worse unless we begin solving these problems.
